NEURO-ZIKA: Neurological Manifestations of Zika
Professor Lisa F.P. Ng, University of Liverpool, is leading the project entitled "Investigating the link between Zika virus infection and neurological disease in ex vivo and in vivo models".
The project aims to investigate the link between Zika virus infection (ZIKV) and neurological disease in vivo and ex vivo models. The model will be created using mice to investigate whether different ZIKV isolates cause neurological disease. This will be correlated with infection of primary human tissues representing the proposed route of infection: skin, blood and neuronal tissues in the foetus and adult. Professor Ng hopes that the research will provide a list of biomarkers that can be correlated with disease outcome and validate the mouse model so that it can be used in the early stages of drug development.
